Synoptic weather patterns conducive to lightning-ignited wildfires in Catalonia

چکیده

Abstract. Wildfires cause substantial losses to socio-economic and natural assets, especially in Mediterranean climate regions. Despite human activity being the main of wildfires European countries, lightning-ignited should also be considered a major disruptive agent as they can trigger large fires. In addition, recent studies on potential change effects pointed out that may gain relevance areas years come. The present study analyses synoptical weather patterns favouring Catalonia (NE Iberian Peninsula). Being able identify with an elevated lightning-ignition survival at daily timescales would great assistance wildfire management agencies, i.e. locating ignitions holdover fires, preparing for days multiple or routing detection flight paths. It is worth noticing one reasons lightning-caused are difficult manage survive several after ignition, emerging later once surface vegetation becomes dry enough support sustained combustion. For this reason, first step, reliable lightning–wildfire association needed properly date time fire starter each wildfire. Afterwards, circulation types ignition analysed. relies dataset 870 wildfires, gathered by Forest Protection Agency autonomous government between 2005 2020. Lightning data were provided Location System operated Meteorological Service Catalonia. Results show related typical synoptic pattern dominated short-wave trough 500 hPa, three distinct associations: thermal low (51 % fires), northern flow (24 %) prefrontal convection (13 %).

Using model-based geostatistics to predict lightning-caused wildfires

The probability of fire in a particular area depends on a range of environmental and geographic variables. Fire prevention planning can be assisted by the construction of models to identify the variables that have a significant influence on the occurrence of fires and by building maps showing the spatial probability distribution for fires occurring in specific geographic areas. We used generali...

Analysis of synoptic - dynamic weather Changes spring precipitation Comprehensive Iran

Introduction: The main feature of Iran's rainfall is their variability; in fact, changes in rainfall are due to changes in their producing factors. The study of rainfall changes in the country showed that the spatial variations of precipitation from west to east and north to south decreased and these changes are well-coordinated with Iran's major rough nesses. The highest rainfall of the southe...

Synoptic weather patterns and modification of the association between air pollution and human mortality.

To assess whether meteorological conditions modify the relationship between short-term exposure to ambient air pollution and mortality, an examination of air pollution and human mortality associations (ecologic) using hybrid spatial synoptic classification procedures was conducted. Concentrations of air pollutants and human mortality from all non-accidental and cardiorespiratory causes were exa...

J4.2 Synoptic Weather Patterns and Modification of the Association between Air Pollution and Human Mortality

Daily and seasonal fluctuations in mortality have been positively and significantly associated with ambient concentrations of atmospheric pollution and meteorological variables such as temperature and barometric pressure. However, much less is known about the health risk from atmospheric pollutants in the context of frequently occurring weather patterns. The objective of this study is to assess...

A synoptic-climatology approach to increase the skill of numerical weather predictions over Iran

Simplifications used in regional climate models decrease the accuracy of the regional climate models. To overcome this deficiency, usually a statistical technique of MOS is used to improve the skill of gridded outputs of the Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. In this paper, an experimental synoptic-climatology based method has been used to calibrate, and decrease amount of errors in GFS...
